The ingredients needed to make Khara pongal:
  1. Take 1 cup rice
  2. Prepare 1 cup yellow lentils(moong daal)
  3. Make ready 5-6 garlic clove
  4. Take 1 teaspoon cumin and mustard
  5. Take 8-10 curry leaves
  6. Prepare 2 Green chillies
  7. Get 1 tomato
  8. Make ready 10 cashew
  9. Get 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  10. Get 1 tablespoon oil/ ghee
  11. Prepare to taste Salt

Khara pongal recipe has two feathers in its cap: taste and health. For this reason, you should include it in your list of healthy vegetarian recipes. Instructions to make Khara pongal:
  1. Dry roast the lentil till golden colour.
  2. Wash lentils and rice. Add 5 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 whistle.
  3. In a wok heat oil or ghee add mustard and cumin. After mustard start popping add slightly crushed garlic. Add green chillies few pepper and curry leaves.
  4. Add chopped tomato and cashews. Crush remaining pepper and add.
  5. After tomatoes are cooked add cooked rice.
  6. Add salt 1/2 cup water or as required. Add chopped coriander leaves. Mix well and cook for couple of minutes.
  7. Serve hot with peanut chutney or enjoy as it is.

Ven Pongal or khara pongal is a very popular breakfast in Tamil Nadu. It is the most simplest and easiest breakfast recipe. I do not prefer to eat pongal in hotels as they mostly use dalda. Khara Pongal - my all time favorite rice dish along with Bisi Bele Bath and certainly my most preferred "rice item" when I go for a breakfast or lunch in fast foods here in Bangalore.
